Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, the tow truck technician determines the best method to remove vehicles from the current location and operates the machinery on the tow truck to recover and transport vehicles.
Essential functions:
1. The tow truck technician must receive information about the vehicle requiring a service often from a radio or phone. This information usually includes the vehicle make, model, color, location, driver’s name and reason for the towing. The technician then drives the tow truck equipment to the designated site.
2. When on the tow site, speak with the customers to learn the details of the vehicle’s problem. Then, explain the solution in easy-to-understand language. Customers are typically anxious, angry or upset and the tow truck operator must remain helpful, polite, and calm.
3. Make simple repairs such as replacing flat tires or spark plugs, jumping batteries, and fixing disconnected or broken wires. If the problem is lack of fuel, assistance may need to be given to the motorist to assist them in getting to a safe place.
4. Attach cables, chains or other equipment to winch the vehicle to towing elevation or onto the truck flatbed. Connect any necessary lights to the back of the vehicle.
5. Complete the tow safely to the house, service station, impound or tow lot. Observe and comply with all traffic laws, and operate at a safe speed for the weather conditions and road conditions.
6. Complete the transaction for the tow service by, accepting and recording payments and providing a receipt.
7. Create reports of each service call including the date, time and location of the service; information about the car, a description of the services performed and distance towed.
8. Complete routine care and maintenance to the tow truck so that a clean, professional unit is presented to the customer.
9. Prepare for tow situations by loading and replenishing all needed supplies, enabling the technician to have the tools and equipment needed for a variety of situations at a moment’s notice.
10. Complete a pre and post trip inspection of the vehicle and supplies to identify any mechanical concerns or repairs needed.
Skills and qualifications:
· This position requires familiarity with tow truck equipment, automotive maintenance and repair.
· Valid driver’s licenses and safe driving record is required
· Dependent upon the size of the tow truck operated, a special operator’s license may be required
· Must possess the ability to problem solve in a field environment, finding unique and workable solutions to situations that are presented.
· Mechanical ability to operate complex equipment and provide mechanical solutions
· Excellent communication and customer service skills are a must
· Knowledge of safety procedures and compliance with those procedures at all times
work environment and physical requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to traffic or other safety sensitive situations. The technician often works in extreme weather conditions as well as experiences required interactions with a variety of customer’s in difficult situations.
The employee is regularly required to be stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb up and down equipment and uneven terrain. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.
