This is a Full-Time position with the Department of Health.
The South Dakota Department of Health is hiring a full time Inspector for the Medical Cannabis Program.
The Field Inspector is responsible for conducting onsite surveys, investigations, providing technical assistance, and responding to complaints and statutory violations. As a key member of the Medical Cannabis team, the Field Inspector must demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and leadership. The Field Inspector also works with external partners, and helps to develop, implement, and evaluate program operations within the Medical Cannabis Program. This position plans, develops, implements, and evaluates processes behind the medical cannabis establishment inspection process to ensure the safe and effective operation of the Department of Health Medical Cannabis Program. Duties include inspection of establishments and working with certified medical cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, dispensary, and testing establishments to ensure regulatory compliance, handling public complaints, training establishment inspectors, and other duties as assigned.
Travel is required. Preference may be given to candidates geographically located in Rapid City or the surrounding area. The position will work in an office environment with time spent across the state at inspection locations and field offices for training purposes.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- experience working in or with government entities, working as part of a team, and having the ability to successfully navigate multiple complex projects simultaneously;
- previous inspection experience, science/agricultural courses or degrees, and/or cannabis industry experience.
Knowledge of:
- awareness of applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations;
- proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook);
- procedures and techniques used in program analysis and planning.
Ability to:
- provide technical assistance to establishment owners and team members;
- provide input on high profile work that represents the Medical Cannabis Program with external parties;
- possess initiative and the ability to take on tasks and projects.
- interpret and explain regulations and requirements;
- write informative, descriptive reports following inspections;
- use investigative techniques and conduct effective interviews to acquire necessary information and gather clear and concise documentation;
- answer phone calls/emails and troubleshoot potential solutions with establishments and external partners;
- exercise independent judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions;
- organize and maintain accurate records;
- effectively manage time and prioritize workload;
- maintain objectivity;
- develop self, to expand own knowledge, apply it, and share with others.
