Valley Wine Warehouse (VWW), founded in 1999, is a privately owned and operated third party public wine warehouse. VWW is located in American Canyon, California and specializes in premium wine storage. VWW provides bonded and tax-paid warehousing and distribution services to over 500 small and medium wineries and wine importers. Our neighbor and sister company, Vinfillment, provides direct to consumer shipping services to many of our winery clients as well as other wine producers
Job Summary
The Human Resources (HR) Manager is an integral member of Valley Wine Warehouse and affiliated company’s management team(s) and is a contributor to developing and maintaining a quality and high performing company culture. The HR Manager reports to senior management and is involved at all levels of the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works closely with our management team to develop and implement human resources policies, procedures and programs to support business objectives and ensure the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Manages the full recruitment process. Works closely with hiring managers and supervisors to define the scope and responsibilities of positions and coordinates the recruitment process to attract qualified candidates.
- Conducts new hire orientations to welcome and introduce the new employee to VWW’s organizational structure, vision, mission and values. Works with supervisors and managers to conduct an effective employee on-boarding process to assure the success of the new employee and encourage employee retention.
- Facilitates with 3rd party staffing as needed. Sources and works with staffing agencies assessing agencies responsiveness, candidate quality and pricing.
- Partners with managers and supervisors to provide guidance and recommendations to effectively address employee relations issues. This may involve investigation and evaluation of workplace issues and recommending appropriate action and follow-up to promote a positive and productive work environment.
- Handles employee complaints ensuring timely and thorough investigations, including documentation and communication with involved parties, and making recommendations for resolution that ensures employee concerns are addressed and company policies are followed fairly and consistently.
- Consults with supervisors and managers regarding optimizing employee performance or performance improvement, corrective counseling and other HR issues to ensure acceptable employee performance and compliance with company policy.
- Advises managers and supervisors on layoffs and other adverse employee actions such as suspensions and/or terminations. Conducts exit interviews as appropriate.
- Assures compliance with State & Federal wage & hour laws. Manages leaves of absence (LOA), e.g., FMLA, CFRA, PFL, work injury leaves, etc. Works with supervisors and managers to administer LOAs; meets with employees requesting or requiring LOAs, calendars dates, assures completion of all required paperwork/forms, informs all appropriate personnel; works with managers and employees to coordinate return-to-work (RTW) and RTW status related to restrictions and/or reasonable accommodations or modified duty.
- Assures required supervisory and employee training, e.g., sexual harassment and abusive conduct prevention, etc., is provided.
- Prepares and submits for approval all employee status changes including hiring, LOA, RTW from LOA, layoff/termination, etc.
- Assures compliance with State & Federal wage & hour laws.
- Promotes safety awareness and actively participates in VWW safety and ergonomic programs.
- Spanish translations, both verbal and written may be required for policy communications, work related accommodations, safety-related interactions, etc.
Education/Experience/Skills & Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources or related field and 6+ years of diverse progressive experience in human resources; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHR or SPHR Certification, or other equivalent HR certification preferred.
Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
Excellent communicator with the ability to influence and persuade across all levels of the organization exercising a high degree of confidentiality, professionalism and diplomacy.
Good working knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations and their applicability to real life work situations.
Organized self-starter who possesses a Can-Do attitude and is able to work without close supervision. Willing to role-up the sleeves and do what needs doing to get the job done.
Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, time sensitive environment with shifting priorities; is very attentive to details and accuracy and possesses strong analytical judgement.
Exemplary writing skills including policy and procedure writing, employee and business communications, reports and proposals preparation, etc.
Proficient in MS Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Is required to travel to several American Canyon/Napa warehouse locations. May be required, on occasion, to travel to Madera, CA and Dallas, TX to assist affiliated companies with HR activities. Must possess and maintain a valid CA driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and required automobile liability insurance (when using a personal vehicle for company business).
Able to sit for long periods with significant computer work; able to travel by car and walk in winery/production areas. Able to lift and move 50lbs.
