The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for PLC programming, developing user interfaces, hardware testing, program debugging, commissioning, process validation, and providing end user support for custom plastics processing equipment. The Controls Engineer works closely with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Designers, Builders, Assemblers, and Process Engineers to ensure that equipment is designed and built to meet customer requirements and expectations.
Job Duties
- Review customer specifications and sales quotations to gain an in-depth understanding of equipment requirements and features
- Coordinate with Electrical Designers, providing any necessary feedback or technical expertise required
- Develop PLC code using a combination of in-house library code and project specific code custom tailored for the application
- Generate full featured HMIs using a mix of in-house control elements and project specific custom control elements appropriate for the application
- Setup all remote IO, VFDs, servo drives, temperature controllers, and any other intelligent devices that require configuration
- Perform validation of all electrical hardware, ensuring that hardware is functional and installed correctly
- Carry out verification of proper installation and function of all safety devices
- Debug and test all application code, certifying that all control code operates correctly and all HMI screens and controls are navigable, properly connected and perform accurately
- Complete control loop tuning on all closed loop systems assuring response time and stability are achieved
- Commissioning, start-up, and acceptance testing of complete systems at customer facilities
- Communicate status and time estimates to assist with project scheduling
- Extend technical guidance and mentoring to customers and in house staff
- Contribute to the continued effort of developing and documenting programming standards and reusable code libraries
- Provide support for the Service group, assisting with troubleshooting efforts related to program, circuit, and process issues
- Travel to customer sites to perform scheduled upgrades and unscheduled emergency troubleshooting and problem solving on previously installed equipment
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of demonstrated knowledge in control systems design for machinery
- Highly proficient with Allen Bradley PLC’s, HMI’s, and servo controls
- Understanding of closed loop control and ability to design and tune control loops (speed, temperature, pressure, tension, etc.)
- High level programming language experience preferred (C++, C#, Java, Python, etc.)
- Understanding of object oriented programming and capability to write reusable library code
- Experience with configuring and programming variable frequency drives
- Ability to configure and use remote I/O devices such as Ethernet IP, Modbus or similar.
- Understanding of electrical codes pertaining to custom equipment (NFPA, UL, CSA, CE)
- Thorough understanding of applicable machine safety standards and implementations (ISO 13849)
- Proven history of working independently and managing multiple assignments
- Effective communicator capable of independent as well as team collaboration
- Exceptional problem solving, analytical reasoning, and debugging skills.
- Strong sense of urgency and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with MS Office Products
- Strong communication skills – listening, verbal, written, and presentation.
- Must be available for overnight travel, including international destinations
- Must have a valid driver’s license
