Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
EHS specialists are responsible for planning, implementing, and enforcing an organization's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures. Their primary objective is to create a workplace that is safe and healthy for people and the company as a whole.
- Review, update, develop and maintain existing company safety and emergency policies and draft new ones as needed
- Monitor and stay current with all applicable federal, state and industrial safety-relevant regulatory/code changes
- Develop and schedule safety training presentations and tools for employees, contractors and temporary staff
- Train employees and temporary staff on all job specific safety policies and programs
- Oversee employee testing/training procedures of e.g. respirator use and fit testing
- Correct safety-related deficiencies; involve department/management as needed
- Ensure that all contractors’ staff and their activities comply with all safety rules while on site
- Satisfy documentation requirements of all relevant safety regulations and codes
- Conducts scheduled and surprise inspections of assigned facilities and settings.
- Enforces applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations including food handling regulations, sanitation regulations, and regulations controlling the proper handling of biological waste, harmful pollutants, and other contaminants.
- Monitors air and water quality.
- Monitors the presence of and identifies hazardous pollutants that may pose a threat to public health and environments.
- Implements environmental protection regulations and health standards for business, public, and residential areas.
- Drafts inspection reports to document inspection findings.
- Lead Safety committee and facilitate safety-related items
- Work with workers compensation insurance company on audits
- Execute other responsibilities and projects as required
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Extensive knowledge and experience in managing site safety and environment programs
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
- Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
- Associates degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred in Environmental Safety, Biology, Chemistry, or related field required.
- Three years of related experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs., climbs stairs, ladders, frequently walk facilities and stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone, use computer systems
