St. Mark Lutheran Church seeks a part-time Music Minister beginning immediately.
Ministry Description
The Minister of Music/Worship leads the church in a music ministry that will inspire and enhance congregational worship and fellowship, engage all age levels in a variety of music experiences and education, and promote music as an important part of meaningful corporate and personal worship and spiritual growth.
Our Church
We believe that our worship is accessible, welcoming, and friendly, especially to those who might experience discrimination, such as the LGBTQ community. Our service is traditional in liturgy and strives to be creative when planning for music and worship. We welcome all ages, including children, to be part of the worship.
Duties of the position include:
- Responsible for presenting live music at our regular 10:15 A.M. Sunday service, and all essential midweek services.
- Practice and rehearse with the choir and cantor on a regular (aspire to weekly) basis.
- Develop a youth and children’s choir, taking into consideration the number of youth and children in the congregation and the results of the incumbent’s outreach efforts to the families of children enrolled at St. Mark Lutheran Church Preschool.
- Recruit and practice with instrumentalists from the congregation and beyond for special performances.
- Plan services through regular meetings with the pastor and, for special services in the church calendar, in cooperation with the worship committee .
- Oversee the care and upkeep of all instruments and ensure timely renewal of all music licenses.
Additional administrative duties include:
- Communicate with the church secretary regarding the order of worship, special music, organist schedule, and any other music and worship matters.
- Produce educational articles for the bulletin and newsletter about worship music and seasonal celebrations.
- Manage the music ministry budget, as approved, and submit required reports, estimates and requests according to relevant church policies and by specified deadlines.
- If not available for weddings and funerals of church members when asked, maintain a substitute list
- Attend continuing music education conferences as approved and funded by the church.
Reporting Responsibilities
The Director of Music and Worship will work under the supervision of the Lead Pastor, in cooperation with the Worship Committee, with ultimate accountability to the Mission Council Executive Committee. An annual evaluation of the Music Ministry program will be conducted by the Pastor and the Executive Committee.
Time and Compensation
The position is expected to grow to require up to 20 work hours per week. Salary will be subject to experience and is negotiable. Compensation is expected to increase with added responsibilities. (For example, the church currently does not have a children’s choir. If one were developed, that would be an increased responsibility resulting in increased compensation.)
Paid time off is offered for two Sundays, extra time off will be coordinated with the Pastor. This position does not offer health insurance.
Qualifications
A degree in music education, music performance or equivalent experience.
Ability to play the organ and piano with a preference for both.
Ability to actively engage the congregation during worship through music.
Ability to promote harmony in the workplace by maintaining good working relationships and supporting committee decisions.
Ability to give and receive constructive criticism and to compromise.
Enthusiastic with good verbal and written communication skills.
