The Role:
As the Weather Observer, you'll play a vital role in collecting and analyzing critical weather data under the guidance of our Senior Observer. This data is essential for reliable forecasts and scientific research.
The Location:
This position is based at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) Upper Air Station in Greensboro, NC. You'll be utilizing a Manual Radiosonde Observing System (MROS) workstation.
The Responsibilities:

Be part of a team taking twice-daily observations, 365 days a year. (Think: sunrise and sunset!)

Support an average of six additional observations annually.

Record weather data meticulously using various instruments, primarily the MROS system.

Transmit data accurately and on time to the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).

Manage gas supplies and consumables, ensuring quality and proper inventory control.

Maintain safety protocols while working in diverse weather conditions.

Collaborate with colleagues to analyze and interpret weather data.

Maintain clear and accurate records as required.
The Qualifications:

1 year of recent experience (within the last 3 years) taking surface and upper air observations.

Solid understanding of meteorology and climatology.

A keen eye for detail and the ability to record data accurately.

Experience using weather instruments and equipment.

Physical fitness and the ability to work in various weather conditions.

Excellent communication skills to report weather conditions clearly.

The ability to thrive in a team environment while also working independently.

Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
The Schedule:
This role requires participation in twice-daily observations, with scheduling flexibility based on team needs. It could be a set schedule (20-40 hours/week) or a flexible one set a month in advance. A minimum of 1000 working hours is required annually to maintain salaried benefits. Be prepared to be available for urgent needs as well.
