JOB SUMMARY
This is a position description for the Abatement Crew Worker within Vacant Building Enforcement (VBE), Housing and Rehabilitation Division within the Department of Buildings (DOB). The mission of the Department of Buildings is to protect the health, safety, economic interests, and quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors in the District of Columbia by issuing permits, conducting inspections, enforcing building, housing, and safety codes, regulating land use and development. The Vacant Building Enforcement has responsibility for enforcing all District of Columbia laws relating to vacant buildings and vacant lots within the District of Columbia. In addition, VBE has responsibility for addressing violations of vacant property maintenance and the residential property maintenance codes that have been identified and have not been corrected by the property owner. Violations of the code can include but not be limited to excessive vegetation and/or properties that are open and accessible to the public and present a safety concern and/or can become an incubator for criminal activity.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbent works as a member of a crew or team. The following tasks as part of the daily activities performed at assigned locations throughout the District of Columbia: Performs general landscaping activities at assigned locations. Sweeps, picks up, and bags trash and debris that has accumulated at assigned locations. Lifts landscaping and construction equipment and/or supplies into trucks, trailers, industrial receptacles, and storage units. Barricades open and accessible properties utilizing basic carpentry tools and wood.
Provides customer service to the residents of the district. Maintains a safe job site at all times.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT
Incumbent must be able to work in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions. Incumbent primarily works outside in all weather conditions and subjected to traffic hazards when working in certain areas requiring walking or standing in streets; dust, noise, exhaust fumes, and hazards from working with refuse. Incumbent may also be exposure to rodents and animals normally associated with an urban environment (dogs and cats), and areas of the District of Columbia which may have criminal activity.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is covered under a collective bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.
