The Fig Cooking School is looking for a hardworking and self-motivated person with food prep and/or catering experience along with strong interpersonal skills to work with us 20-30 hours a week. Your tasks will vary day-to-day, but will include assistance during classes, prep cooking, class prep, and grocery shopping.
We are a recreational cooking school located in Milford, CT. We offer classes, team building events, and dinners several nights a week. Our menus are inspired by food all over the world, and you’ll learn a lot working with us. Work at Fig is intense, but extremely positive and rewarding, and we always have a great time together. You’ll also eat extremely well.
Email/Indeed applications only. Please send a cover letter through Indeed or directly to The Fig Cooking in order to be considered (info@figcookingschool.com). NO calls please.

REQUIREMENTS
- Availability Nights and Weekends
Nearly all of our classes and events take place in the afternoon/evening, and most take place on weekends. That said, we will need availability during the week.
Please send us a cover letter to us directly (info@figcookingschool.com) or through Indeed letting us know why you are interested and qualified for this job. Applicants will not be considered without a cover letter.
While we will try to make your schedule as regular as possible, the nature of our business is that things often come up and change at the last minute. We often need help on a moment’s notice so flexibility is essential.
Our team is small, so members must always seek to do their job more efficiently, and be willing to spot another team member if they’re overwhelmed. You must also always be positive and flexible about the tasks assigned to you – while you will usually be in the kitchen, we all have to mop the floor and do the dishes sometimes.
You will usually be front-of-house during events and service, often greeting guests as they arrive, or helping them out during classes. You must be warm, welcoming, and outgoing. When/if there is ever a disagreement between you and a guest, it’s essential that you maintain a calm, positive attitude and not get defensive. You must assume the best of your coworkers and guests.
While you won’t be cooking short order, you’ll be doing a lot of prep work and cooking some dishes/desserts ahead of time, so experience and speed are expected. Culinary degrees, restaurant and catering experience are a strong plus.
We pride ourselves on keeping the kitchen clean and neat. You must be good not only at minute-to-minute organizing (clearing as you cook, keeping a handle on dishes, etc.) but also large scale organizing, like doing overhauls on the fridge, pantry, or basement storage when necessary.
- Ability to Listen + Willingness to Learn
We have a very specific way we like our food made, and our systems to run. We will always teach you what you need to know, but you need to be able to understand, respect, and remember what we tell you. We are of course open to hearing new ideas, but we expect that when an instruction is given, it will be followed as directed.
We spend a lot of time together, so there’s no room for complaining, negativity or drama of any kind.
You have to show up when you say you’re going to show up.
- Covid Vaccination Required
Candidates must be fully vaccinated (both shots of Pfizer and Moderna, OR one shot for Johnson and Johnson plus one shot of either Pfizer or Moderna) and show proof of vaccination in order to be considered. Boosters are also encouraged.
- Transportation + Location
Reliable transportation is a must. Living nearby is a plus.
Small changes make a big difference towards making our space look put together and giving our guests a positive experience.
Always follow proper hygiene and food safety practices. We shouldn’t have to tell you to wash your hands.
Or willingness to procure certification within 1 month of employment.
- Over age 18
- Bartending experience
Or willingness/ability to learn quickly. While bartending duties here are not too complex, we do often need to fill many orders very quickly. You will also need to take inventory and re-stock the wine cooler as needed.
- A degree of physical fitness
Ability to lift some bulky boxes
Preferable but not required:
You will be asked to take short videos of the classes and testimonials from guests, and photograph the food prepared at the end of each class for our social media team.
Note: This is NOT a teaching position. All classes are taught by our culinary director. You will, however, have the opportunity to learn a lot, as you help prep and assist at classes.
Perks: Employee discount on classes, AMAZING food at family dinner, recipes from any class you assist at.
