The role of the Safety Officer with Silver Bay will have the following qualifications to be considered for the role:

- Ability to work in a dynamic industry in a food processing plant (experienced)

The responsibilities of the position include the following:
- Follows all OSHA/AKOSH/EPA standards and company policies while on company property as well as while operating a company vehicle off property
- Ensures site information is complete and current and on-site safety program activities are documented
- Files near misses and first reports of injury, completes accident investigations, and relays information to facility and corporate management
- Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace and report to the Plant Manager
- Plan, develop, implement and document safety training for new employee orientation and annual required programs
- Coordinates the development of safety policies to comply with OSHA standards and to ensure employee safety
- Schedule safety meeting times, document minutes
- PSM committee member and scribe
- Assist 3 party contractor in conducting annual noise survey and employee hearing tests
- Conduct an annual chemical physical inventory and audit SDSs
- Assist HR Manager in the maintenance of OSHA logs and posts OSHA 300A form in accordance with regulations
- Participates in quarterly claim reviews
- Notify management of regulatory/enforcement visits, accompanies inspector, attends opening and closing conferences, documents the inspection and conferences including photos
- Conduct a planned emergency evacuation drill 1 time each season
- Schedules 1 Aid/CPR training
- Attend daily production morning meetings and update group on safety items as needed
- Conducts and documents on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices
- Manages and maintains all safety related documentation, safety recordkeeping, and reporting requirements
- Support a safety culture for the facility
- Develops safety programs to maintain employee safety awareness
- Establishes safety committee and schedules meeting times
- Assists human resources in monitoring worker compensation claims
- Help develop controls for identified hazards, coordinate the implementation of controls from result of hazard analysis
- Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the hazard control system, policies, and procedures and recommend changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate work place accidents and injuries

Competencies

Functional
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one- on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance. General knowledge of hand tools is necessary.
The Safety Coordinator position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift and telehandler which in turn requires a valid driver’s license. First Responder/CPR certification required within 3 months of hire date. OSHA 10 or 30 hour preferred but not required.
Interpersonal
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Three to six months experience working in an industry covered by general industry standards, preferably a seafood processing facility. Knowledge of general industry and construction safety standards and willingness to enforce use of relative protective clothing/equipment. Ability to read, understand, and interpret regulations as necessary.
Work Environment and Schedule
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employee housing is located 3/10 of a mile from the facility, therefore employees must be able to commute unassisted to and from the company bunkhouses.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently use interpersonal and customer service skills. The employee is regularly required to understand English and utilize teamwork skills. The employee is frequently required to speak English and use decision making skills. The employee is occasionally required to use mentoring skills, problem analysis, training, and supervision skills. The employee will be occasionally required to read and write in English, perform basic math, exercise independent judgment, and use discretion. Employee must be able to withstand moderate to high levels of stress.
