The DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office is seeking attorneys licensed to practice law in Illinois to fill 2 Assistant Public Defender positions. Duties will include the representation of clients in felony, misdemeanor and traffic matters as well as in juvenile abuse/neglect and delinquency cases
Becoming an Assistant Public Defender would allow you to be involved with the defense of criminal charges within local government, ranging from negotiating dispositions on misdemeanor and traffic charges, litigating motions, and conducting jury and bench trials. Your day will consist of the preparation of the defense of criminal cases, from bond call through ultimate disposition. You will have endless opportunities to impact and make a difference within DeKalb County and to build working relationships with employees, countywide departments and the public.
Candidates must possess integrity, a desire to represent those unable to afford counsel, and strong research, writing and negotiation skills. Applicants will need to be able to manage a caseload effectively, communicate with clients, opposing counsel and judges and possess the ability to effectively problem solve and work well both individually and in a team atmosphere.
Starting salary is commensurate with experience. July 2024 Bar takers are encouraged to apply! Will consider those with a 711 License pending Bar results.
