LECTURER
Position Summary:
The Department of Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry (MB&B) (http://mbb.yale.edu/) at Yale University invites applications for a lecturer or senior lecturer with an appointment starting July 1, 2024. The initial appointment will be either one to three years, depending on the levels of experience. The initial duration and rank (Preceptor, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer) of the offer to the successful applicant will be commensurate with experience.
MB&B seeks a new colleague who will join us in our efforts to expand and modernize undergraduate laboratory instruction, develop new research-based coursework, mentor undergraduates and promote equity and inclusion among a diverse group of nascent scientists. The successful candidate is expected to be an interactive member of the department and to contribute to teaching excellence within a lively community. Instructional expectations span first year undergraduates to early-stage doctoral candidates. An enthusiastic subgroup of MB&B faculty, appointed by the Chair, will be committed to working with and supporting the continued growth of the successful candidate. The primary initial responsibility will be teaching of a novel 100-level laboratory class for first- and second-year students, designed to pair academically with introductory biochemistry, cell biology and fundamental physics. The course series is entitled Introduction to Physics in Living Systems Laboratory. Over time, the successful candidate will assume responsibilities for existing laboratory instruction at the 200-400 level and develop new coursework with help from a creative and supportive instructional staff. MB&B is particularly well suited to applicants qualified to instruct in biochemistry with substantive backgrounds in one of the physical or engineering sciences.
The Department is committed to hiring, mentoring, and advocating for colleagues who will contribute to equity, inclusion, and excellence in our community. The candidate’s plans to promote these values in teaching and mentoring will be an integral part of their application and should demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing historically disenfranchised groups in academia, including but not limited to women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Qualifications
Candidates qualified for this position will have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree and previous experience as a graduate teaching assistant or other teaching at the college level, and the ability to effectively work with faculty, staff and students involved in these courses.
